Depending upon how well, or poorly, a building’s HVAC system was designed and currently functions, indoor air can contain many pollutants hazardous to humans. Smoke, radon,
molds and allergens, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, bacteria, volatile organic compounds, asbestos, and particulates are all common pollutants that can become trapped
within a building and cycled endlessly throughout.
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) refers to the air quality within and around buildings and structures, especially as it relates to the health and comfort of building occupants.
Monitoring and controlling the levels of common indoor pollutants can help you reduce the risk of indoor health concerns, help keep your HVAC equipment running more efficiently,
and help you maintain compliance with regulatory standards.
IAQ Meters
Indoor air quality meters are instruments optimized for monitoring conditions related to air quality. In doing so, they generally utilize technology commonly used in other meters.
Though the meters differ in what sensing capabilities may be included, they are generally from among the following:
- Temperature
- Relative humidity
- Carbon dioxide
- Carbon monoxide
- Air velocity
- VOCs
- Particulates
Additionally, many meters include calculations such as dew point, wet bulb and % outside air that can help you determine conditions within a building.
IAQ meters are often handheld making it easy to spot check conditions throughout a facility though fixed-mount versions are available for constant monitoring of a particular location.
Meters may include data logging functions for storing test results, advanced communications for transferring data to another device, or software which helps analyze data and generate
reports.
Properly deployed, IAQ meters make it easy to verify a building mechanical systems are maintaining a healthy environment for employees, customers, or visitors.
